Know This First: Will your insurance cover your windscreen repair? 

Windscreen repair (or replacement) isn’t automatically covered, so you will need to check your insurance policy. However, repair or replacement is more likely to be covered if you have a comprehensive policy with extended coverage specifically covering windscreens. Depending on the cost of repair vs the cost of replacement, some insurance companies may opt for a replacement instead of a repair.

If you are part of a membership program, such as NRMA, they may provide up to 20% discount.

The Different Types of Windscreen Damage 

Below are the most common types of windscreen damage and a general guideline as to whether or not they can be repaired. If the damage is deep, long, or within 70mm of the edge of your windscreen, it may not be eligible for repair. 

  1. Cracks – most single-line cracks can be repaired if they are between 25mm to 100mm. If they have branches, repair may not be an option. 
  2. Bullseye or Star – circular damage with a ring or starburst of cracks can likely be repaired if the damage is between 10mm and 20mm. 
  3. Chips – half-moon chips and other chips can likely be repaired if they are between 15mm and 30mm. 
  4. Craters – craters are the most concerning type of damage as they have an increased risk of shattering your windscreen. They can likely be repaired between 2mm and 5mm. 
  5. Combination – a crack that combines any of the damages above is complex to repair, takes more time to repair, and there is a greater likelihood that it can’t be repaired. 

Important: Factors that impact cost include the length, depth, location and the complexity of damage. In terms of complexity, a crack with branches will cost more to repair than a single-line crack. 

How Much Does Windscreen Repair Cost? 

Unlike replacing your windscreen, the make, model, or age of your vehicle does not impact the repair price. However, if the windscreen needs to be replaced, vehicles with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) cost more. The most up to date price ranges are as follows:

  • Crack – between $60 and $110
  • Bullseye – between $60 and $120
  • Chips – between $60 and $120
  • Craters – between $60 and $120
  • Combination – between $100 and $150
  • Full windscreen replacement—from $175 to $1,000 for standard vehicles. Between $1,000 to $2,000 for oversized, speciality, and sports vehicles.
  • Membership discounts—if you are a member of NRMA or a similar membership program, check to see if your membership includes a repair or replacement discount. This discount can be as high as 20%. 

How Can I Get the Best Price?

  • Compare prices with local repair shops with the understanding that the precise price can’t be determined without a visual inspection. 
  • DIY repair kits may be an option. They must be used as directed and only stop the damage from spreading – we don’t believe they’re a permanent fix for most cars.
  • Generally, there is little flexibility in pricing when it comes to windscreen repair – it’s a standard service. However, given the costs involved, there are ways to lower the costs going forward:
  1. Consider upgrading to comprehensive insurance or adding on extended coverage that includes windscreens. Often the price is small – $4 a month etc, and the benefits go beyond windscreens.
  2. Consider joining a membership program such as NRMA for various vehicle repair, maintenance, and roadside assistance benefits with repair discounts.

How am I Charged?

You must pay for repair after the repair is complete. Most technicians accept your direct credit (internet banking), cheque, cash, credit card and Eftpos. 

Can I DIY Windscreen Repair?

It depends; you can purchase DIY windscreen repair kits for $25 or less. However, unlike a professional repair, a kit only prevents the damage from spreading while a professional repair restores your windshield.

DIY kits are limited in the range of damage they can address. The larger, deeper, and longer your damage is, it’s less likely a DIY kit will be effective. Professional windscreen repair kits can be purchased online for around $600 however these are not cost-effective for occasional use and require professional training to use. In addition, if used incorrectly, they can shatter your windshield.

In summary, unsuccessful DIY repairs increase the likelihood of further damaging or shattering your windscreen and the risk is often not worth taking.

How much does windscreen repair cost in Brisbane?

If you don’t have car insurance that covers the repair or a vehicle membership discount, you will pay between $60 and $150 to repair your windscreen. Price varies by the damage’s length, width, depth and by the damage type – crack, chip, crater, bullseye, or combination. 

Can windscreen cracks be repaired?

It depends. If the crack isn’t too long and it isn’t too close to the edge of the windscreen, a technician may be able to perform a repair. However, cracks over 100mm typically can’t be repaired. 

Can a crack on the edge of my windscreen be repaired?

If the crack is more than 70mm from your windscreen, it may be eligible for repair. You may need to replace your windscreen if it is longer than 100mm or branches into multiple cracks.

It depends on your policy. Repairs may be covered if you have a comprehensive and/or extended policy. If repair is not covered, you will have to pay out-of-pocket. If you have an NRMA or vehicle service membership, you may be eligible for a discount of up to 20%.
